Honors and Awards

  • Holds distinction of being the very first Registered Nurse to be crowned Miss America (in 1988).
  • Recognized as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Americans 1993 by the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce.

Career Objectives

To utilize her visibility as a former Miss America to focus national attention on critical health care issues including AIDS, pulmonary disease and cancer. 

Experience/Activities 

  • Traveled to 48 states and 6 countries, addressing nurses, hospice and AIDS groups.
  • Addressed a Congressional subcommittee in Washington, D.C. in Fall 1987 about nurses, including the nursing shortage, salaries, improving working conditions, educational funding, and federal reimbursement policy.
  • Participated in fundraising activities for nursing scholarships sponsored by the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, American Lung Association, hospice groups, and Mothers against Drunk Driving (MADD).
  • Made presentations (to name a few): Make a Wish Foundation, Helping People with AIDS, American Red Cross, medical associations, hospital associations, pharmacy groups, civic organizations, junior high and high schools, Boy Scouts of America, United Way, March of Dimes.
  • Prepared public service announcements (both national and state) for nurses, volunteers, and hospice programs.

Kaye Lani Rae Rafko Kaye Lani is a very motivational and charismatic speaker. Her message to Nurses and allied health personnel renews their sense of pride in their professions and their mission in caring for patients and each other. Her words reach out to those in the hospice and AIDS groups because of her strong commitment to use her celebrity in making a difference in their lives.

Kaye Lani and husband Charles Wilson have two children, Nicolas Paul, 7 years old, and 2 year old Alana Rae.
